According to Dr. Oliver Bevington, a senior registrar in paediatrics at Southampton Children's Hospital, there is 'absolutely no evidence' that OTC cough medicines work. In fact, he warns that they could actually do more harm than good.

One of the main concerns is that many OTC cough syrups and medicines contain ingredients like paracetamol, which can lead to unintentional overdosing by parents who are unaware of the risks. Additionally, these products often include active ingredients such as nasal decongestants, antihistamines, and 'cough suppressors' that can have adverse effects or be toxic if consumed in large doses.

Dr. Bevington also notes that many coughs and colds in children are caused by viral infections, which will get better on their own with rest, fluids, and possibly paracetamol and/or ibuprofen. However, many parents worry about persistent symptoms and may reach for OTC cough syrups in a misguided attempt to alleviate their child's discomfort.

The truth is that there is 'a lot of conflicting advice' about the use of OTC cough syrups and medicines, which can be confusing for parents. Dr. Bevington urges them to opt instead for 'old fashioned' remedies like honey and lemon, which are safer and more effective in the long run.

As we head into the busiest time of year for hospitals and GPs, it's essential that parents are aware of the risks associated with OTC cough medicines and take a more informed approach to treating their child's coughs and colds. By choosing natural remedies and following evidence-based guidelines, parents can help keep their children safe and healthy this winter.
